UIC—Community College Collaborative for Excellence in Teacher Preparation

2001–2002
Institute for Developing Excellence in Teaching Undergraduate Science and Mathematics

All seven Collaborative institutions recruited faculty to participate in the 2001-2002 Institute, which began with two faculty development workshops held concurrently on May 21-25, 2001 at UIC.  Enrollment in the third Institute was the highest of the three Collaborative Institutes:  17 math faculty and 18 science faculty participated.  Further, five faculty from either the first or the second Institute applied to and were accepted in the third Institute.

Teaching Science Workshop:
The workshop was organized and run by Maria Varelas, Donald Wink, Yvonne Harris, and Joe Becker.  Representation of the seven Collaborative institutions was as follows:  UIC (1), Olive-Harvey (4), Triton, (3), Oakton (4), Washington (5), Truman (0), and Harper (1).

Several sessions were presented by guest speakers including:  sessions by past participants about the plans-for-change they had implemented, a discussion of the Illinois science standards, joint sessions with the mathematics faculty on gender issues and instructional issues for students with English as a second language, and a session on evaluation procedures for investigating the teaching projects.  On Thursday, there was a joint poster session in which six past participants exhibited the projects they had done and discussed their work with the new participants followed by a dinner for new participants and former participants to talk with one another.

Teaching Mathematics Workshop:
The workshop was organized and run by Philip Wagreich and Mercedes McGowen.  Representation of the seven Collaborative institutions was as follows:  UIC (6), Olive-Harvey (1), Triton (6), Oakton (1), Washington (1), Truman (1), and Harper (1).

AY Activities:
The science faculty and the mathematics faculty arranged for four meetings for the academic year.  Following the schedule of the first two years, the third meeting for each group will be a joint meeting in late January or early February.  Participants will submit their final drafts of their plans-for-change at the beginning of August.
