Apr 12: Mathematics, Real Estate, and Home Building
Are your students looking for relevance in their math course? The building and buying and selling of homes can be a great source for practical mathematics. Check out these articles in the March 11 Tribune Real Estate section:
Click here for article "Two-by-6 wall studs, set 24 inches apart, allow for more insulation and use less wood" When is an asserted savings really a savings? What information must you supply? Can you connect this with patterns and linear functions?
Click here for article "How can the government report nearly 6 percent average appreciation on existing homes while the most comprehensive private-sector study of selling prices says they're down by more than 3 percent?" Is a median really resistant to change?
Please save Apr 12 and May 10 (both are the second Thursday of the month) for future independent workshops. Come as a group for some departmental team-building. There are stipends and CPDU credits.
John Baldwin and John Masley will lead discussions on how to connect this and similar problems to Chicago classrooms. Feel free to bring in your own examples. Even better, e-mail or fax (312-996-1491) them in advance so we can have copies available.
