The University of Illinois at Chicago invites you and your CPS colleagues to the:
Fall 2007 CPS-UIC Math Forum
(an expansion of the former Algebra Symposium)
Thursday, November 15
4:30 to 7:30 PM
How do items like perimeter and/or area come up in math courses? What are common student misconceptions about these items? What should they know at what level?
This is a follow-up to the September 6 talk on Fostering Geometric Thinking. See these handouts for more details. We'll divide into groups based on Middle School Math, Algebra I, Geometry, and advanced High School Math. The groups will each propose a problem concerning area/perimeter appropriate for the course determining the group.
John Baldwin and John Masley will lead discussions on the impact of these and similar problems to Chicago classrooms. In particular, we'll address the impact of earlier courses on later ones. Come as a group for some departmental team-building. Our grant has expired so there is no stipend, but we'll provide a light dinner, 3 CPDU credits, and parking reimbursement for this time if you bring your parking ticket to the meeting.
4:30 to 4:45: Sign in, informal networking
4:45: Welcome and introduction of the questions for small group discussion.
5:00: Small group workshops and networking
5:35: Readouts from the small groups to the whole team.
