Installing EMTEXGI and PostScript fonts on your pc

Please direct questions to uripeled@uic.edu
If you are displeased with the TeX installation on your PC, you might try upgrading to the (free!) EMTEXGI package. Follow the instructions on this page to do so. We recommend that you install GSview and Ghostscript before installing EMTEXGI.

Emtexgi fully incorporates the de-facto standard emtex system for running TeX, LaTeX, and related programs on pc. In addition, it is configured for Windows 95. It includes a good Windows editor PFE, a good Windows viewer dviwin, dvips for creating postscript, automatic font generation, spell checks and much more. It contains a convenient control panel for launching all of these programs. The present installation also includes the Computer Modern fonts in postscript form from the AMS, as well as Times, Helvetica and Courier postscript fonts, all ready to use. The installation is automatic and the detailed steps are listed below.

  1. Print this guide.
  2. Verify temp directory.

The file opens in PFE. Insert a * in column 1 of the last two lines to comment them out (these lines select a European a4 paper, and we want the default letter paper). Save the file by clicking the red diskette icon and exit PFE.
  23. Test your Emtexgi system.

  24. Look in the file \temp\install.txt (you can now open it from your new PFE) on how to test your Emtexgi system and some troubleshooting advice. (You have already done the installation steps; look in the enumerated list in Step 8 and on for testing, documentation, cleanup and troubleshooting.)
  25. Test your postscript fonts installation.

  26. With Netscape, browse the file http://www.wfu.edu/Academic-departments/Economics/ftp/times.htm for instructions on how to test your installation of Times, Helvetica and Courier postscript fonts, and some explanations.
  27. Clean up.

  28. You may now delete all new files in c:\temp with the following possible exceptions:
install.txt: keep a copy in \emtex\mytex for reference
unzip.exe: you may wish to keep a copy, perhaps in a new directory c:\Unzip
You might follow additional cleanup suggestions listed in install.txt

If your installation doesn't work, in particular if you encounter an "Error loading from file", trouble shooting information is available on the EMTEXGI Home Page.
