Mathematics 118

Course Syllabus: Summer 2008

Meeting time: 10:00 – 11:40 AM MTWThF

Place: 310 AH

DESCRIPTION:  Not open to students with credit in any one of Mathematics 090, 092, 121, 150, 160, 165, 180, or the equivalent.  No graduation credit for architecture, business administration or engineering students.  The only mathematics department course for which Math 118 serves as a prerequisite is Math 123.  Math 118 does not replace Math 090 as a prerequisite for courses requiring Math 090.  Elementary topics from algebra applied to descriptive statistics of data, scatter plots, correlation, linear regression, probability, random samples, sampling distributions, experimental designs.  TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator is required.

Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in Math 070 at UIC or equivalent course in Elementary Algebra. The prerequisite may be waived on the basis of ACT scores.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Fred Thulin

TEXT: Mathematical Reasoning; Special Edition for University of Illinois at Chicago; Pearson Publishing Company.

Graphing Calculator: A TI-83 or TI-83 Plus calculator or TI-84 or TI-84 Plus is requiredNo Exceptions.  This model has the statistics and financial functions necessary for the course components of Math 118.

Student Email: Each student at UIC has an assigned email address that should be activated and read daily.  Each student is responsible for monitoring email daily.  Changes in the course syllabus, although rare, will be communicated through the university email.

Course Grade:  Course grades will be determined on the following basis:

1.      Two examinations (100 points each: 200 points total) Dates are listed in the course outline. The examination dates are clearly given in the syllabus, and it is the student’s responsibility to be present. If an examination is missed and only if the student has written documentation of an illness (MD’s explanation, hospital record, etc.), the missed examination may be replaced with a score equivalent to one-half the score on the final examination. (Note: Such substitution is not automatic.  It can only be used with the proper documentation, and it can only be used once.)  [The only exception to the policy concerning make-up examinations are individuals involved in officially sanctioned University events such as athletic contests. If a student is involved in such an activity, documentation must be provided from the appropriate department]

2.      Final examination (200 points). Students who fail to take the final examination receive a grade of F for the course.  Conflicts arising in the final examination schedules are to be resolved according to the directions given in the Timetable.

3.      4 quizzes (25 points each). 5 quizzes will be given, one each week with the exception of the weeks in which an exam is scheduled.  Beginning with week 1 a quiz will be given on Thursday in discussion session.  The quiz will cover material from the previous week’s lecture material and will be given during the final twenty minutes of the session. (Consult the syllabus below for weekly material).  The quiz point total will be the sum of the highest 4 scores from 5 quizzes for a total of 100 points. No make-up quizzes will be allowed.

Semester grades are determined on a percentage of the total points earned:  200 points for hour exams; 100 points for the quizzes and 200 points for the final examination.  (Note: The final semester grade is not based on an average of letter grades for the individual components.  A semester grade is calculated on the basis of percentages of the semester point total. (See Below)

Letter Grade:  Final semester grades are determined from the cumulative point total (possible 500 points).

                        430 – 500       A

                        380 – 429       B

                        330 – 379       C

                        280 – 329       D

                         0 –    279       F

COURSE SYLLABUS AND TENTATIVE OUTLINE:

In the following outline, the section column refers to the specific textbook section.  For example B2.1 refers to the Blitzer textbook, chapter two, section one; while S1.1 refers to the Sullivan textbook, chapter one, section one. In the textbook, the chapters for Blitzer’s text are listed first followed by the Sullivan chapters.  Page numbers for the chapters in both sections are not numbered sequentially.  The final column of the assignment sheet below contains the exercises to be worked at the end of the section listed in the section column.
