Math 445 - Introduction to Topology I

Textbook and Syllabus

We will be following "Topology, a first course" (second edition) by Munkres. The course covers Chapters 1 to 4 and 7 to 8.

Students are expected to prepare for lectures by reading the sections to be discussed. From time to time there will be problem sessions in place of lectures where we discuss assigned problems. Students are expected to solve assigned problems before the problem sessions and be prepared to discuss their solutions, and ask about problems they were unable to solve.

A detailed timeline of sections and problems covered in each class can be found here.

Grading

Grades will be calculated out of 300 points based on two takehome exams (100 points each) and homework assignments (100 points).

Homework

Homework problems are collected every Friday. Students are encouraged to discuss and collaborate on homework problems, but solutions should be written up independently. Weekly homework assignment consist of two problems worth five points each. A student's term grade for homework is the sum of their ten highest homework scores.

Homework assignments are posted here.

Exams

There are two take-home exams. The first is handed out October 19 and collected on October 24. The second is handed out on November 30 and will be collected on December 7, which is the last day of class.
