Mapping class group and the moduli space of curves
Abstract: In this talk we will explore the relation between the structure of the mapping class group Mod_g (i.e. the group of homotopy classes of orientation preserving diffeomorphisms of a compact orientable surface of genus g) and the topology of M_g, the moduli space of smooth projective curves of genus g. We will describe the the moduli space M_g as a quotient of Teichmuller space by a natural action of Mod_g, and how this gives us a "rational" classifying space for the discrete group Mod_g.
