Heegaard splittings, pants decompositions,
and the geometry of hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
Abstract: In this talk, I will discuss joint work with Juan
Souto in which we introduce a notion of pants
distance for strongly irreducible Heegaard splittings
of 3-manifolds. This pants distance serves to
estimate the hyperbolic volume of closed hyperbolic
3-manifolds admitting such splittings. I'll discuss
this result and other potential implications
of these combinatorics to the geometry of such hyperbolic
3-manifolds
