Graduate Student Colloquium

A Glimpse at Birational Geometry
Abstract: We will analyze a very specific way of deforming an algebraic variety (birational models). This will be the core of the talk. If time permits, we will see that despite the fact that such deformations are badly behaved from the topological point of view, it seems that moduli spaces under such transformations remain moduli spaces. In this talk we will give evidence (mainly due to I. Coskun) suggesting that this phenomenon warrants further exploration.
This talk is meant to be accessible for graduate students of all levels; no technical knowledge of algebraic geometry will be assumed.
