Number Theory and Dynamics from a Non-Archimedean Vantage Point
Abstract: Complex analysis contributed an amazing collection of ideas to number theory in the 19th century --- the Riemann zeta-function and Weierstrass uniformization of elliptic curves, to name two. The 20th century saw a similarly dramatic rise in the use of n on-Archimedean or p-adic analytic techniques. This talk will survey a number of contributions to number theory and dynamical systems that are only truly visible from a non-Archimedean vantage point. (I will provide binoculars.)
