A brief introduction to descriptive set theory and Polish groups
Abstract: This talk will consist of two parts; first we will discuss some basic descriptive set theory, including Baire Category, the Kuratowski-Ulam theorem, and basic applications. Next we will discuss the basic theory of Polish groups, in particular the locally compact totally disconnected theory, on which Phil will elaborate in the following week.
The talk will assume no background in mathematical logic or descriptive set theory, and should be accessible to all graduate students.
