What is... a normal surface algorithm?
Abstract: In this talk we will introduce the idea of a normal surface in a 3-manifold, and discuss how they can be used for various algorithmic tasks. In particular we will focus on Abigail Thompson's version of Rubinstein's 3-sphere recognition algorithm.
