3-Manifold groups with the same finite quotients
Abstract: A recent note of J. Hempel gives examples of closed, oriented, 3-manifolds whose fundamental groups are non-isomorphic but have isomorphic profinite completions. This is in contrast to the case of surfaces---Bridson, Conder, and Reid have shown that two Fuchsian groups are isomorphic if and only if they have isomorphic profinite completions. This talk will be self-contained and will use these examples to highlight some current themes in low dimensional topology for interested new graduate students.
