Which Connected Spaces Collapse to an Arc?
Abstract: It is conjectured that every infinite connected normal Hausdorff space has a quotient that is homeomorphic to the closed unit interval. If in addition a space is locally connected then it is known that such a quotient exists. We will give a proof of this fact and discuss examples that demonstrate difficulties in proving the more general case.
