Volume & Bounded Cohomology I: Characteristic numbers of 3-manifolds, the Gromov norm, and Mostow rigidity.
Abstract: This is the first talk in the GGTDS readings on volume and bounded cohomology. We will introduce the Gromov norm on singular homology, as well as other examples of characteristic numbers, as motivating examples for this semester. Further exploring the connection between homology and geometry, we will use the Gromov norm to provide a proof of Mostow rigidity for hyperbolic manifolds.
