Is there model theory without axiomatic set theory?
Abstract: At least since Skolem's formulation of his paradox set theory and model theory have been intertwined. In contrast to Skolem, we investigate the methodological role of set theory in model theory. We will address several questions. What is the role of axiomatic set theory in model theory? How does this depend on whether the object of study is a logic or a theory? What is the role of combinatorial set theory in model theory? In particular, what is the role of indiscernibles in model theory? What is the role of cardinality in model theory. How do properties of largish cardinals affect countable countable models? In this talk we will outline some of these issues and discuss some competing views.
