Visualizing Simple Closed Curves on the Five Punctured Sphere
Abstract: How can we visualize the set $\mathcal{C}$ of simple closed curves on a surface $S$ with negative Euler characteristic? Using a theorem of Thurston, I will show how we can embed $\mathcal{C}$ into a cotangent space of Teichmuller space, and then use stereographic projection to obtain a visualization in $\mathbb{R}^3$. Computer generated visualizations will be shown on the projector at the end.
