Strong property (T) and invariant metrics
Abstract: Strong property (T) was introduced in 2006 by Vincent Lafforgue as an obstruction to the Dirac-dual Dirac method of proving the Baum Connes conjecture. It has also been used to prove cases of a conjecture of Bader-Furman-Gelander-Monod on actions of higher rank lattices on Banach spaces. I will discuss a new application of this property to group actions on manifolds which plays a key role in recent progress on Zimmer's conjecture.
