Complex Geometry Made Simple
Abstract: I will discuss a surprising connection between a problem in complex geometry and a flow in the plane called the Hele-Shaw flow. In more detail, the problem of interest concerns finding geodesics in the space of Kahler metrics on a given manifold, which is governed by a certain PDE called the Homogeneous Monge-Ampere Equation. It has been notoriously difficult to understand when this equation admits (regular) solutions, and thus when such geodesics exist, and in this talk I will discuss a ''duality" between a particular instance of this problem and the Hele-Shaw flow, that has shed much light on this topic.
