An introduction to singularities: characteristic 0 vs. characteristic p
Abstract: One of the difficulties that arises in algebraic geometry is the existence of singularities (or "non-manifold" points). I will introduce singularities and some of the methods we use to study them. In particular, I will compare methods in characteristic 0 and characteristic p, and discuss when they match up.
