Counting flat connections on a Riemann surface
Abstract: There are numerous ideas that go into a good definition of a count of "primitive" objects in a category, and indeed what it means for an object to be primitive in the first place. Many of these notions can be upgraded to statements about singular cohomology of moduli spaces, and indeed there are certain counting heuristics that are most naturally expressed at this level. This all becomes rather concrete at the level of counting flat connections on a Riemann surface, and gives rise to a simple to state, but so far mysterious conjecture on what the cohomology of the moduli space of primitive local systems is.
