Amenability II: Conjectures & Refutations
Abstract: The von Neumann-Day conjecture asserted that a countable group is non-amenable
iff it contains a non-abelian free group. While the conjecture was proved false
by Ol'shanskii in 1980, if one resricts the complexity of the group or loosens
the notion of containment, the conjecture holds true. We will survey the results
in this direction, both new and old.
