Recent progress on minimal surfaces and phase transitions
Abstract: I will describe techniques developed in recent years from both min-max minimal surfaces and mean curvature flow. I will show how these apply to the study of minimal surfaces in quasi-Fuchsian manifolds. This is a joint work with V. Lima and F. Vargas Pallete. Progress on min-max, has also sparked a parallel development in the theory of phase transitions. This theory is very broad and it has connections to geometric analysis and mathematical physics. I will discuss joint work with F. C. Marques and A. Neves.
