Introduction to Quandles and Fox Colorings
Abstract: This is an introductory talk to an algebraic structure, the quandle, and its applications in knot theory. An (involuntary) quandle is a (non-associative) algebra A with one binary operation * such that a*a = a for all a in A, (a*b)*b = a for all a and b in A, and (a*b)*c = (a*c)*(b*c) for all a,b,c in A. We will discuss the relationship of quandles to group theory and knot theory and the study of Fox colorings of knots. This is an introductory talk, and should be accessible to anyone with some background in abstract algebra.
