Analysis of Einstein's spacetimes: dispersion, collapse, and bouncing
Abstract: I will begin with basic notions required to formulate Einstein's field equations and tackle the the global evolution problem for spacetimes. A variety of phenomena are known to arise in this evolution: gravitational waves, dispersion, collapse, formation of singularities, bouncing, etc. While many problems in these directions remain widely open and very challenging, in the past decades major mathematical advances were made for several classes of spacetimes. I will review some of these recent results, namely: (1) nonlinear stability of Minkowski spacetime, (2) collapse of spherically symmetric spacetimes, and (3) scattering in spacetimes admitting a quiescent singularity.
