Influence of Great Researchers at ISI, Kolkata: From Statistics to Game Theory
Abstract: Often graduate students concentrate on accumulating high grades in a variety of graduate courses and years pass by with no real thesis problem in sight. ISI style has always been to let you struggle till you discover your own thesis problem. Inspired by the first chapter of Wald’s seminal work on Statistical decision functions, when I jumped to chapter 2, I found my initial mathematical background was quite inadequate. in steering my initial interest from Wald’s Statistical decision theory into Game theory and to the theory of positive operators, many great researchers at ISI Kolkatta have played a significant role.
My talk will walk through some facets of this struggle and the decisive role played by professors C.R Rao, D. Basu, K.R Parthasarathy, V.S Varadarajan and S.R. S Varadhan.
