Rank gradient of cyclic covers
Abstract: I'll explain two different proofs of the following theorem: the family of cyclic covers dual to a nonseparating surface in a hyperbolic 3-manifold has positive rank gradient if and only if the surface is not a fiber. I'll also give some background about why one might care, and pose a question raised by comparing the two proofs.
