Essential solenoids and Cheeger-Simons invariants
Abstract: In this talk, I will revisit the thesis work of James Heitsch, who used Cheeger-Simons invariants to study the homotopy type of foliation classifying spaces.
We give a construction of smooth foliations with solenoidal minimal sets, and use the Cheeger-Simons classes to show that their classifying maps are essential.
This provides the first new construction of foliations with non-trivial secondary classes in the past 30 years.
