Graduate Studies
The Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science is a Group I Public Doctoral Granting Mathematics Department as designated by the American Mathematical Society. The Department has over 50 faculty and post-doctoral fellows and 165 graduate students, most enrolled in doctoral programs.
The department offers 5 areas of concentration for both PhD and Masters students:
- Pure Mathematics
- Applied Mathematics
- Mathematical Computer Science
- Mathematics Education
- Statistics
Faculty research interests cover a broad range of areas including Algebra, Algebraic Geometry, Algebraic Topology, Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Combinatorics, Dynamical Systems, Game Theory, Geometric Topology, Logic, Mathematics Education, Number Theory, and Probability and Statistics.
The University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) is the largest institution of higher learning in the Chicago area. The University offers bachelor's degrees in 87 fields, master's degrees in 88, and doctoral degrees in 58.
The University Library houses more than 2.2 million volumes and 30,000 current journal titles, more than half are electronic. The Mathematics Library, located within the Daley Library, has more than 20,000 volumes and contains more than 240 journals. Graduate students have access to library resources of nearby institutions and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
The University is located just west of the Loop, Chicago's downtown center, which is 5 minutes away by public transportation. The city is well-known for its concerts, theaters, galleries, museums, parks, ethnic restaurants, and lakefront recreation. UIC joins with the other distinguished institutions of higher learning in the Chicago metropolitan area to contribute to an exciting atmosphere for the study of mathematics.
